Au point de rencontre entre la montagne et la plaine, LES VANS jouent le rôle traditionnel de la ville marché.

D'abord foyer artisanal avec le travail des peaux, du cuir et la laine, il devient par la suite
un pôle marchant plus important.

C'est à partir du XVIII ème siècle que la ville connaît son véritable essor économique grâce à la sériculture.

Chef-lieu de canton, le bourg est devenu un important centre touristique, commercial et la 5 ème porte du Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche, qui comprend 132 communes, 6 villes portes, 180 000 hectares, 56 000 habitants, 40 PNR en France.
